Egypt: a view from the bus

The water level of the Nile was low during our visit, so our agenda was changed, instead of motoring up the river to the Dendera Temple complex we where bused up. The road we used followed a canal several hundred feet in from the Nile. The distance to Dendera is about 20 miles but the ride took over an hour to get to the temple. We traveled on a two lane road passing many very small farming villages. The road to the villages intersected with the main road and several hundred feet on either side of the road was a series of speed bumps, the bus had to slow down to go over these bumps. All of the pictures below are taken from the bus window as we slowed to cross the speed bumps.

We were told that every village has a mayor, but I think it might be more like a senior family member, and the mayor had men with rifles standing at the entrance to their villages to keep order???

Great photos. I particularly like the one with the sheep-

Is Egypt a mostly muslim country? I guess I have never associated any particular religion with Egypt….hmmm…other than just ancient gods;Osiris, Isis and the like.
